How to Stay Cool While Breastfeeding in the SummerBy a Texas-Based Doula Who Gets the Heat

As a Texas-based doula, I know firsthand how intense the summer heat can get — and I also know that breastfeeding doesn't take a summer break. Whether you're traveling for vacation or simply trying to stay cool at home, nursing in 90-degree weather with a sweaty baby on your chest can feel overwhelming.

The good news? There are ways to keep yourself (and baby) comfortable, cool, and confident while breastfeeding during the hottest months of the year.

☀️ 1. Choose Breathable, Nursing-Friendly Outfits

You don’t have to sacrifice style for comfort. My go-to suggestions for summer nursing wear include:

  • Lightweight cotton or bamboo nursing tanks

  • Flowy button-down dresses or wrap tops for easy access

  • Hidden-zip nursing rompers

  • Moisture-wicking bras, like the Kindred Bravely Sublime bra or anything with cooling mesh

Texas mamas — skip anything clingy or synthetic. Trust me, you’ll thank me later.

🧊 2. Cool Your Core Before Nursing

If you’re feeling overheated, baby will feel it too. Try:

  • A cool washcloth on your neck or chest before feeding

  • Nursing in a shaded or air-conditioned area

  • Cooling gel pads (yes, even the postpartum ones — they work wonders before and after nursing)

👶🏽 3. Use Light Layers for Baby

Swaddles in summer? Not unless they’re breathable muslin or bamboo. When nursing:

  • Dress baby in just a diaper or a short-sleeve onesie

  • Ditch heavy blankets — your body heat is plenty

  • Use a light, gauzy nursing cover if you prefer privacy

🧳 4. On the Go? Plan Your Feed Breaks

Whether you're headed to Galveston, the Hill Country, or Grandma’s house for summer vacation:

  • Map out rest stops with shade or A/C for feedings

  • Keep a cooler bag with extra water and snacks

  • Clip on a portable stroller or car seat fan to stay breezy

💦 5. Stay Hydrated, Sis

Hydration is everything — especially when nursing in the heat.

  • Keep a refillable water bottle within arm’s reach

  • Add coconut water or electrolytes into your daily rotation

  • Snack smart with water-rich foods like cucumbers, melons, and smoothies

💛 You Deserve Comfort, Too

Being a breastfeeding mom is real work — doing it during a Texas heatwave is next level. With the right wardrobe, planning, and accessories, you can nurse comfortably without overheating.

If you're struggling with latch, supply, or just want to feel more confident, I offer Mini Lactation Consults — quick 30-minute virtual sessions focused on your specific needs. Perfect for summer flexibility and peace of mind.

📩 Ready for some cool support?

Stay cool, stay nourished, and remember — you don’t have to do this alone.💛 From one mama to another, I see you.
